And the Man Remained Silent..

19 Oct And the Man Remained Silent..

And the man, wondering at her, remained silent..

Remained silent.

So as to know whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous..

———-

I’m sure you remember the story.

Abraham’s son Isaac is all grown up, and needs a wife,

And please..please..not a Canaanite one!

So his father summons a trusted servant, and hands him the job of obtaining a suitable bride from among Abraham’s people.

So the servant takes ten camels and sets off on a journey to Haran in Mesopotamia, where Abraham’s kinfolk live. A journey that could easily take one full month on camel-back.

After a while, the servant arrives at the city gate and makes the camels kneel at an adjacent well.

All Ten of Them.

And then he prays.

He addresses the God of his master Abraham:

“O Lord God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day.., let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac.”

And even before the man has finished praying, the Lord responds.

A young woman, “very beautiful to behold”, arrives at the well.

Her name is Rebekah, from the house of Terah, Abraham’s father.

Perfect!

The servant swiftly engages his plan, and runs to meet her.

“Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher,” he says.

Rebekah obliges, quickly letting down her pitcher to give him a drink.

He drinks.

And then she does an incredible thing.

She runs – runs – back to the well, this time to draw water for the camels.

All Ten of Them.

The man is astonished.

But, even after witnessing this spectacle, he does not presume to know the Lord’s will concerning Isaac and this beautiful lady.

She has passed the test, yes, but is she The One? Is she the woman he has traveled 500 miles to meet? And take back to his master Abraham?

Quite tellingly, this is what happens next:

“And the man, wondering at her, remained silent so as to know whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not.”

——–

Dear reader, how many times have you gone to our Father in fervent prayer – begging, pleading, negotiating, entreating, bargaining.

You’ve cried out to the Lord. Prostrated yourself on the floor. Danced a jig before His Presence.

Done everything you could to put forth a most compelling case.

You were absolutely desperate to hear from Him – right then and not a second later..!

And then, just as the Lord was about to speak, off you went!

You packed up your prayer, bible – everything – and headed off to the next plan.

Here’s the thing;

If you would just linger for a moment, just a single moment after your prayer, you might just hear His voice, loud and clear.

Think of it this way;

If your very own child were to come to you with an urgent request, seeking your attention, would you not listen? Would you not hear? And would it not be your utmost pleasure to respond?

So next time you are in the presence of our Great and Mighty God, be still and listen.

You might just hear what He has to say.

Maybe even in a heartbeat, if you will just pause and listen.

Oh wow! I can get over how easy you make it to follow the word, to understand it and to appreciate it. You are truly a blessing. This is a calling for sure. I believe God has a big smile on his face as he watches you pen down this blog. Be blessed.

So true. The Bible tells us to be still and know that He is God. We are normally so quick to pray and instead of waiting upon God, off we go to help Him answer our prayer by doing things in our own strength. One other thing this story taught me years ago, is that as parents, we should start praying for our children’s spouses from an early age. So that when the time comes, God will give the a Godly spouse who will have been chosen by God. We tend to take such things so lightly yet they are heavy matters that affect the lives of our children. We must also teach them to pray for the right partner when they are in the dating stage.
