05 Jan No More Blood on Aaron’s Toe..!
A few weeks ago, as I was reading the Book of Leviticus, I came across a very interesting passage indeed – a passage that describes the consecration of Aaron, Moses elder brother, as High Priest.
Exactly as the Lord had commanded him, I learnt, Moses had washed Aaron with water, dressed him with priestly garments and anointed him with oil.
Then, just as instructed, Moses had offered one bull as a sin offering, one ram as a burnt offering and another ram for his consecration.
And then came the curious bit.
Moses, I read, had then taken some of the blood of the second ram and smeared it on Aaron’s right ear, right thumb and on the big toe of his right foot.
Stop right there! I thought.
What on earth did Aaron’s ear, thumb and toe have to do with this process?!
Some further digging was in order.
So as usual, I turned to my valued Assistant, Messrs NKJV Study Bible, 1982 Edition.
“They were his extremities, top to bottom, possibly to represent the total covering of his sins by the sacrificial blood,” Messrs NKJV explained.
I see.
So the blood on Aaron’s ear, thumb and toe were symbolic.
They were to represent atonement for his sins, via the sacrificial offering of the ram.
The entire process was the Lord’s command at the time, and what an incredibly illustrative one it was!
But then fast forward a number of centuries, and at the appointed time came the Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ.
And through His crucifixion, death and resurrection, our Lord Jesus had offered up the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.
He became our Savior, Mediator and High Priest, and took away the need for the elaborate rituals of the Old Covenant.
Hear the words of the Apostle Paul:
For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; Who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, For this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
How incredible!
That through the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, all we have to do now is put our faith in the Son of God and our sins shall be forgiven.
Can someone say “GRACE!”
Yes indeed, dear reader, we are most fortunate to have come into this world during this wonderful age of Grace, where forgiveness of sin is just a quiet prayer away..
And there is no more need for blood on Aaron’s big toe..!
HAVE A BLESSED NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

And he brought the second ram, the ram of consecration. Then Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, and Moses killed it. Also he took some of its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. Leviticus 8: 22-23
For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
